Iceland has a way of making you feel small in the best possible way. The land stretches endlessly in every direction, vast and untamed, where waterfalls thunder without apology and the ocean meets the shore with both beauty and warning (no kidding, there a sign for that). It's a place that demands presence, where the elements are not just a part of the scenery but part of the experience itself.

John and Michelle travelled from Calgary, and I arrived from Edmonton, each of us drawn to the same edge of the world. Though we didn't journey together at first, our paths crossed in a way that felt natural, as if the landscape itself had arranged the meeting. The following day, we spent time travelling Icelands golden circle together, taking in the quiet moments between destinations, the kind that often become just as meaningful as the places themselves.

Our time together unfolded across some of Iceland's most striking locations. At Skogafoss, the mist rose thick and constant, carried by the wind as the waterfall roared behind us. Reynisfjara was raw and powerful, the black sand stretching beneath our boots as the ocean roared towards us, beautiful and dangerous all at once.

The day was overcast, cold, and relentlessly windy, a reminder that Iceland doesn't soften itself for visitors. And yet, that's part of what makes it absolutely unforgettable. In May, during shoulder season, the land felt expansive and unhurried, offering space to breathe, to take it all in, and to exist fully within the moment. The sun barely set leaving you in blue hour for hours and the sheer magnitude of the surroundings created a sense of awe that words can only begin to describe.

This is what elopements in places like Iceland offer. Not just photographs, but an experience shaped by landscape, weather, and the shared feeling of standing somewhere extraordinary together.
