Documenting a Sri Akhand Paath Sahib in Edmonton | Sikh Faith & Ceremony Photography
I had the opportunity to attend my first Sri Akhand Paath Sahib Arambh in Edmonton, Alberta, just before marrying into my husband’s family. It was my first time being invited into a Sikh religious setting of this nature, and I approached the experience with curiosity, respect, and a deep sense of gratitude.
Sri Akhand Paath Sahib is the continuous, uninterrupted reading of the entire Guru Granth Sahib, the central spiritual scripture in Sikhism. The Arambh marks the beginning of this sacred recitation. It is typically performed in the presence of family, friends, and community members, and is carried out with devotion, humility, and reverence.
What stood out to me most was the sense of unity and calm within the space. The atmosphere reflected a deep commitment to faith, family, and collective participation. Even as someone new to the tradition, I felt welcomed and included, while also aware of the importance of simply observing and honoring the moment.
Being present at the Arambh gave me an early glimpse into the values and spiritual practices that are important within Sikh culture. It was not only a religious experience, but also a meaningful introduction to the family and community I was about to become part of.
